Successful applicants will gain British citizenship by descent, which generally means you cannot pass this citizenship on to any children born outside of British territory. Our team of expert immigration solicitors is here to provide tailored advice and legal representation for your UKM application on a fixed-fee basis. You can ask questions online for free or book an appointment for detailed guidance on your application for British citizenship.
Born before January 1, 1983: You were born before this date.
Eligibility through Maternal Lineage: You would have automatically become a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by descent if women had been able to pass citizenship to their children in the same way as men at the time of your birth.
Right of Abode: You would have acquired the right of abode in the UK if:
o Your mother was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by birth, legal adoption,
naturalization, or registration in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man at the time of
your birth.
o One of your mother’s parents held the same status.
o One of your father’s parents held the same status.
o You were a resident in the UK for a continuous period of five years before 1983 and had
become settled in the UK by the end of that period.
o You are a woman who was married to a man with the right of abode in the UK before
January 1, 1983.
The second requirement ensures that you would have been a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by descent if your mother had been able to pass on citizenship as men did at the time of your birth. You will meet this requirement if:
If your application is successful and you live in the UK, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. The Home Office, UKVI, will send you an invitation letter, specifying the local authority you need to contact to arrange the ceremony. You are expected to attend the ceremony within three months of receiving the invitation. If you fail to do so, your registration may be canceled, and you will need to reapply and pay the processing fee again. If you reside outside the UK, your ceremony will be conducted at the nearest British embassy or consulate in your country. During the ceremony, you will take an oath of allegiance to the Queen and pledge your loyalty to the UK. You will then receive your certificate of registration as a British citizen. Taking this oath or affirmation and making the pledge is a legal requirement and marks the moment you become a British citizen. Exemptions from attending the ceremony are rare and granted only in cases of physical or mental incapacity. If you believe you qualify for an exemption, you must provide a valid reason and supporting evidence.
