If you hold British National Overseas (BNO) status and reside in Hong Kong, you are eligible to apply for
entry clearance to the UK under the BNO visa.
Requirements for BNO Visa UK
To successfully apply for entry clearance as a BNO status holder from outside the UK, you must meet the
following requirements:
Valid Application You must submit a valid application for BNO visa entry clearance from outside the UK,
in line with the guidelines in Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) of the Immigration Rules.
BN(O) Status Holder Requirement You must be recognized as a British National (Overseas) under the
Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986.
Ordinary Residence Requirement At the time of your application, you must be ordinarily resident in
Hong Kong. Proof of residence can include (but is not limited to):
1- Official Hong Kong ID card
2- Official Hong Kong permanent ID card
3- Itemised bank statements
4- Employer confirmation letter
5- Visa or residence permit indicating residence in Hong Kong
6- Educational records, such as school reports
7- Tax records
8- Records of rent or mortgage payments
9- Payslips
10- Household or utility bills
11- Valid tuberculosis certificate
12- Passport stamps showing travel to and from Hong Kong
Suitability Requirements Your application must not be subject to refusal under Part 9 of the
Immigration Rules, which outlines grounds for refusal.
Financial Requirement The decision-maker must be satisfied that you can maintain and accommodate
yourself without public funds for at least 6 months. You may rely on credible promises of future third-
party support, with funds demonstrated as specified in Appendix Finance. Your accommodation will be
considered inadequate if it is overcrowded or violates public health regulations.
Tuberculosis Test Certificate Requirement If required under paragraph A39 and Appendix T of the
Immigration Rules, you must provide a valid medical certificate confirming you have been screened for
active pulmonary tuberculosis and that the disease is not present.
Entry Clearance Applications from Other Countries You can apply for entry clearance from any country
outside the UK, but you must demonstrate ordinary residence in Hong Kong. For example, students
studying abroad, businesspeople working outside Hong Kong, or those visiting family overseas can still
meet the residence requirement, provided they were ordinarily resident in Hong Kong before traveling.
However, if you have permanent or settled immigration status in another country, you likely will not
meet the residence requirement.
Your BNO visa will be granted for either:
1- 5 years, if you applied for a 5-year period, or
2- 30 months, if you applied for a 30-month period.
The visa comes with the following conditions:
3- No access to public funds
4- Permission to work, including self-employment and voluntary work, but not as a professional
sportsperson or sports coach
5- Permission to study, subject to the ATAS condition in Appendix ATAS
