This visa allows you to come to the UK for work, typically
granting you a five-year stay. As your visa term nears its end, you can apply for an extension or for
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Applications for this visa must meet the requirements outlined in
Appendix UK Ancestry of the Immigration Rules.
Our team of immigration solicitors specializes in providing expert advice and legal representation for UK
Ancestry visa applications. We offer fixed-fee services to guide you through the process from start to
finish. Whether you need quick online advice or a detailed consultation, we are here to help.
Eligibility Requirements for UK Ancestry Visa
To qualify for a UK Ancestry visa, applicants must meet specific requirements as per the Immigration
Rules:
1- Valid Application: The application for a UK Ancestry visa must be properly submitted and meet
all criteria.
2- Commonwealth Citizen: You must be a Commonwealth citizen on the date of your application.
3- UK-born Grandparent: You must have a grandparent born in the UK or Islands.
4- Work Requirement: You must be capable of working and intend to seek and take up
employment in the UK.
5- Suitability Requirements: You must not fall under Part 9: grounds for refusal in the Immigration
Rules.
6- Financial Requirement: You must demonstrate the ability to support and accommodate yourself
and any dependents in the UK without recourse to public funds, as specified in Appendix
Finance.
7- Tuberculosis Test Certificate: A Tuberculosis test certificate is required if applicable under
Appendix T of the Immigration Rules.
You can claim ancestry through either a legitimate or illegitimate line, but not through step-parents
unless you or your parent (through whom you are claiming ancestry) were legally adopted. You must
provide evidence of legal adoption with your application.
Citizenship, Age, and Ancestry Requirements
The specific requirements related to citizenship, age, and ancestry for the UK Ancestry visa are detailed
in paragraph 186(i) to (iii) of the Immigration Rules.
To meet the citizenship requirement, you must be one of the following:
1- A British Overseas Territories citizen
2- A British National (Overseas)
3- A British Overseas citizen
4- A British subject
5- A citizen of a country listed in Schedule 3 of the British Nationality Act 1981
You must prove your status with a valid passport or travel document from a Commonwealth country. It
is not necessary to have been a Commonwealth citizen from birth; naturalization as a Commonwealth
citizen also qualifies.
Age Requirement
Applicants must be at least 17 years old on the date they plan to arrive in the UK. While there is no
upper age limit for the UK Ancestry visa, you must demonstrate that you are capable of working and
intend to seek employment.
UK-born Grandparent
You need to provide evidence that one of your grandparents was born in the UK or Islands. This
grandparent can be either a biological grandparent or a grandparent by legal adoption recognized in the
UK. There is no requirement for the parent or grandparent to have been married at the time of birth.
You cannot qualify for this visa based on a great-grandparent or more distant ancestors born in the UK
or Islands.
To qualify, your grandparent must have been born in one of the following:
1- The UK
2- The Channel Islands (Bailiwick of Guernsey or Bailiwick of Jersey)
3- The Isle of Man
4- Ireland (only if born before 31 March 1922)
5- On a British-owned or registered ship or aircraft, meeting the requirements of either section
50(7)(a) of the British Nationality Act 1981 or section 32(5) of the British Nationality Act 1948.
Adoption
If you or your parent was adopted, you can still meet the requirement of having a UK-born grandparent
if:
6- You were legally adopted by someone with a parent born in the UK or Islands.
7- One of your parents was legally adopted by someone born in the UK or Islands.
The adoption must be recognized as legally valid under UK law. You cannot claim UK ancestry through
step-parents without a legal adoption.
All applicants must demonstrate the ability to work and the intention to seek employment in the UK.
This work can be part-time or voluntary. You do not need to have a job secured before applying, but you
must show evidence of your ability and intent to work. This could include:
1- Job offers from UK employers
2- Evidence of previous work experience or relevant qualifications
3- Applications submitted to UK employers
4- Registration with a UK recruitment agency
5- Steps taken to improve employment prospects, such as relevant training
6- A business plan or interest from potential clients (for those intending to be self-employed)
Financial Requirement
Applicants must prove they can support and accommodate themselves and any dependents in the UK
without relying on public funds. There is no fixed amount of money required, but evidence of sufficient
finances must be provided as outlined in Appendix Finance. This evidence must be current, no more
than 31 days old at the time of application. Support from a credible third party, such as a relative or
friend, can also be used to meet this requirement.
