Eligible Family Members for Switching to a UK Ancestry Dependent Visa
The following family members of a UK Ancestry migrant are eligible to switch to a dependent visa:
Spouse, civil partner, or unmarried/same-sex partner of the UK Ancestry migrant.
Child under 18 years old of the UK Ancestry migrant.
Children who entered the UK on a dependent visa before turning 18 can also apply even if they have
since turned 18.
Eligibility Criteria for Switching to a UK Ancestry Dependent Visa
To qualify for a UK Ancestry Dependent Visa, you must meet the following criteria:
Valid Application: A valid application must be submitted for switching to a UK Ancestry
Dependent Visa.
Immigration Status: Applicants must be in the UK at the time of application and must not hold
or have last held a visa under the following categories: Visitor, Short-term Student, Parent of a
Child Student, Seasonal Worker, Domestic Worker in a Private Household, or outside the
Immigration Rules.
Sponsoring UK Ancestry Migrant Status: The applicant must be the partner or child of a UK
Ancestry migrant who either has leave to remain on the UK Ancestry route or is applying for it
concurrently.
Suitability Requirements: The applicant must not be subject to refusal under Part 9: grounds for
refusal.
Relationship Requirements: The applicant must meet the relationship criteria as defined in
Appendix UK Ancestry.
Age and Care Arrangements for Children: If the applicant is a child, they must be under 18, and
suitable care arrangements must be in place.
Financial Requirements: Sufficient funds must be available to support the applicant, the UK
Ancestry migrant, and any other dependents without relying on public funds, as specified in
Appendix Finance.
For partners of UK Ancestry migrants:
The UK Ancestry migrant must either hold or be applying for leave to remain on the UK Ancestry
route.
If not married or in a civil partnership, the couple must have lived together in a relationship akin
to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years before the application.
Any previous relationships must have permanently ended.
The applicant and the UK Ancestry migrant must not be closely related to the extent that
marriage or civil partnership would be prohibited in the UK.
The relationship must be genuine and ongoing, with both parties intending to live together
throughout the applicant's stay in the UK.
Relationship Requirements for a Dependent Child on the UK Ancestry Route
For dependent children of UK Ancestry migrants:
The UK Ancestry migrant must either hold permission on the UK Ancestry route or be applying
for it simultaneously.
Both parents must either be applying together or have permission to stay in the UK (except as a
Visitor), unless:
o The UK Ancestry migrant is the sole surviving parent.
o The UK Ancestry migrant has sole responsibility for the child's upbringing.
o The non-UK Ancestry parent is a British citizen or has the right to enter or stay in the UK
without restrictions and is ordinarily resident in the UK.
o There are serious and compelling reasons to allow the child to stay with the UK Ancestry
migrant parent.
Care and Age Requirements for a Dependent Child on the UK Ancestry Route
Care Arrangements: Children under 18 must have suitable care and accommodation
arrangements in the UK that comply with UK legislation.
Age Requirement: The child must be under 18 at the time of application unless they were
previously granted permission as a dependent. If the child is 16 or older, they must not be
leading an independent life.
By ensuring you meet these criteria, you increase the likelihood of a successful application for switching
to a UK Ancestry Dependent Visa.
The decision-maker must be assured that the applicant, the UK Ancestry holder, and any other
dependents in the UK will have sufficient funds for maintenance and accommodation without relying on
public funds. The necessary financial evidence must align with the guidelines set out in Appendix
Finance. In determining if the applicant meets the financial requirement outlined in UKA 25.1, the
decision-maker may consider credible financial support promises from a third party, such as a relative or
friend.
